Veterans Affairs Lorain – Community-Based Outpatient Clinic

Currently under construction, the new 25,000 square foot facility will provide primary care, mental health, and specialty services to over 7,800 veteran patients in a comfortable and welcoming facility. Boulevard Studios provided the landscape architecture for the site, a process that involved extensive coordination with the project team’s many disciplines, particularly as it pertained to compliance with Green Globe certification.

On an expansive site, the landscape seeks to reduce lawn area by replacing portions with meadow plantings, native grasses, and low perennials that are hardy to the conditions and easy to care for. Closer to the building, mass plantings give way to a tidier and more formal landscape that is balanced by rock gardens flanking the entryway and canopy.

The significance of a building that serves those who have served is not lost in the design, even outside. Pedestrian movement toward the building is made through a sequence of small gardens and seating areas that house memorials and flag poles, serving as pause points for visitors and patients alike.
